Live from the NJCAA National Tournament

      03/19/2014

The Dean College Men's Basketball players are enjoying their "off time" at the NJCAA National Tournament in Danville, Illinois by visiting local schools and showing the students from three different classes how to dunk. Coach Fazzi also took the time to talk to the students. This fun event comes as a relief from yesterday's game, which the Bulldogs lost at the buzzer, 85-82.

They faced Essex County College (24-5) from Newark, New Jersey and came out of the gate early, opening up a 21-11 lead in the first half. Essex came roaring back, using their dominant size to take a 6-point lead at the half. In the second half, Essex was able to extend its lead to twelve with ten minutes to go before Dean made its move. Behind its tenacious defense and clutch 3-point shooting, Dean took an 82-81 lead with 41 seconds left in the game. Essex forced a turnover and Chris Compas, who led Essex with 21 points, was fouled with 34 seconds remaining in the game. He made both free throws which gave them a 83-82 lead and the Dean Bulldogs played for the last shot. Charles Correa's outside shot attempt was wide with five seconds and Dean was forced to foul, which led to the final score.

Keyon Armstrong led the Dean Bulldogs with 21 points, with five three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. Jamal Reuben and Jalen Myrie chipped in with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Dean will now face St. Louis Community College at 9:00 a.m. CST on Thursday morning for the right to advance in the sixteen-team tournament. St. Louis was a 75-64 loser to Danville Area Community College in their opening game. A free live stream video of the game will be broadcasted.
