2010 Preview
The 2010 edition of Dean softball will be built on speed and defense, as the Bulldogs look to re-vitalize the program under Head Coach John Jackson. Jackson returns to the helm after a five-year absence, when he was two-time Region XXI Coach-of-the-Year. He will be assisted by former assistant softball coach Dale Lippert, and Chuck Horne, who is a former assistant coach at King Philip Regional High School, a perennial softball powerhouse.
Early practices have provided strong showings by freshmen Felecia Wissekerke (Uxbridge, MA), Kasey Vandenburgh (Phoenix, NY) and Valerie Rosenburg (Harrison, NY). They will provide a strong defense at shortstop, third base and second base, respectively. “I have been very impressed with these three in the infield, and we will make teams earn their runs”, says Jackson. “They will also be our run-producers at the top of the lineup”. First base will feature sophomore Lauren Tracy (Hudson, MA), freshman Jerilyn Turrene (West Warwick, RI) or freshman Emily Silvia (Taunton, MA). The bulk of the catching duties will fall to co-captain Jen Dicruttalo (Franklin, MA), a standout hitter who possesses a strong arm and is a tremendous athlete. Turrene and Sivia will provide backup relief behind Dicruttalo.
The outfield will be anchored in center by sophomore co-captain Kat Hickey (Meriden, CT), with the corner positions shared by sophomores Alex Ahern (Canton, MA), Laura Johnson (Chelmsford, MA) and Kelly O’Leary (Bridgewater, MA).
Pitching duties will fall heavily on freshmen Heather Brooks (Arlington, MA) and Anna Puzo (Westfield, MA). Both have shown flashes of speed and accuracy, and they will be the critical pice to a successful season. “Heather and Anna possess different qualities” says Jackson, “and their development will determine how well we will do this year”. Hickey and Tracy will provide relief, when needed.
