Each community can be said to have its own language and dialect. Our student body is truly international and a great number of languages can be heard on campus. But Dean has some of its own vocabulary. Below are some terms that may be helpful to you.
Advisors - these are staffmembers who will advise you academically. You will be assigned an advisor upon admission to the College. Advisors can be found in The Library Learning Common.
Boomer - our official "Bulldog" mascot. Also pronounced "BOOMAH."
Bulletin - the twice-yearly magazine for Dean alumni, family and friends. It is published by the office of Institutional Advancement.
CPA - Center for the Performing Arts - a performance space in a converted church on School Street where many of Dean's theatre and dance productions are staged. There are also faculty offices and practice studios in the CPA.
CSAS - Pronounced "See-Sass" - The Center for Student Administrative Services. CSAS is one-stop for all of your College administrative needs and includes the Registrar's office, Financial Aid, Work-Study, and School for Professional and Continuing Studies. The CSAS office is located in Dean Hall on the first floor.
DDD - Discover Dean Days - a great chance to come on campus and learn what makes Dean College the right place for you. Discover Dean Days include opportunities for you to meet with staff, coaches, faculty and students. You can tour the campus, check out the student residences and dining facilities and more. Click
First Year Seminar - an opportunity to participate in honors classes and sharpen your study and learning skills.
The Library Learning Commons - LLC - One of the College's newest facilities. It includes the Lucey Technology classrooms, Writing Across the Curriculum offices, Advising Center, the E. Ross Anderson Library Stacks, Jazzman Cafe, Assessment space and faculty offices. The building was renovated in the summer of 2008.
MPR - Multi-Purpose Room. The MPR is one of the largest spaces on campus and home to many of Dean's meetings, events, theatre and dance performances. It is located in the Campus Center on the main floor.
NSO - New Student Orientation. Once you are accepted to Dean, you will be invited to attend a two-day orientation program, usually held during the summer for incoming Fall Semester students, and in the fall for incoming Spring semester students. At NSO you and your family will meet with faculty, staff, students, coaches and incoming students with plenty of opportunities to meet your classmates. There are parallel tracks for incoming students as well as their family members.
Peer Tutors - students helping fellow-students how to study and master class material.
Personalized Learning Services - PLS - is a professional tutoring program designed to provide specialized one-on-one tutoring to students at Dean College. This fee-based service is available to any Dean College student who believes s/he would benefit from individualized tutoring and skill development in the areas of study strategies (note taking, time management and organization, test preparation, test taking), writing, reading comprehension, and/or mathematics. We believe that with professional assistance from an academic coach, students will build upon strengths and address areas of challenge.
Portal - Dean's Intranet for faculty, staff and students. It is also known as "Dean Today."
SPCS - The School for Professional and Continuing Studies - Dean's program of continuing and professional education. SPCS also creates customized programs for regional businesses and organizations. It also features "Accelerated Intersessions" - classes in the winter that meet daily over the course of two weeks and allow students to earn full course credit in a short time. SPCS is located in Dean Hall.
WGAO - Dean College's FM radio station. Thinking of working in the communications field? You can work with Dean's faculty and staff to create your own radio show, something other schools often don't allow until you are a junior or senior. Also known as "Power 88."
