Men's Basketball 2012-2013 Preview
October 22, 2012
The Men’s Basketball program opens up the winter campaign under the guidance of 1st year Head Coach Rich Fazzi. Fazzi comes to Dean after two years as an assistant coach at Endicott College. Fazzi was a part of a staff that led the Gulls to the 2011-2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. Prior to Endicott, Fazzi was the top assistant at Suffolk University. He started his coaching career as an assistant at Newbury College.
The Bulldogs will return four letterman from last year’s squad that went 14-11. After last season’s loss in the first round, the Bulldogs have spent the preseason preparing for a conference championship. The task will not be an easy one with perennial conference power CCRI returning the majority of a team that lost in the National Championship this past year. The Bulldogs will have four captains this season that will provide leadership for this upcoming campaign.
Sophomore Jarred Williams (Dallas, TX) returns for the Bulldogs as the team’s floor general in his second season. Williams has exceptional court vision that will benefit the up-tempo style of play that Dean will institute this year. Josh Castillo a sophomore from Lynn, MA, is a guard who not only has the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter but can also attack the basket and finish at a high rate. Sophomore Deven Richardson (Ridgewood, NJ) returns after sitting out last season because of a ACL surgery. Richardson is an explosive forward that finishes above the rim and has the ability to alter shots. Freshman Clyde Niba (Dacula, Georgia) has also been named a co-captain for the Bulldogs. Niba will use his long wingspan to create mismatches for opponents all season. “Our four captains have provided tremendous leadership throughout our preseason workouts”, says Coach Fazzi. “We have stressed the importance of accountability on and off the court from day one”. Sophomore Kyle Wiggins (New Haven, CT) returns to provide an outside shooting threat for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Keith Yearwood (Bronx, NY) has improved all around in the offseason and will be expected to play a key role for the Bulldogs off the bench this year.
Coach Fazzi’s freshman class welcomes 11 newcomers that will have a chance to prove themselves on the court this winter. Freshman Center Austin Mofunanya (Englewood, NJ) is expected to make an immediate impact in the low post for the Bulldogs. Pat McHugh (Watertown, MA) is a fundamentally sound face up 4 man that will compete for minutes at the power forward position. Shay Agboola (Dacula, Georgia) is a ferocious rebounder that will provide energy on both sides of the floor. Local product Jamal Reuben (Brockton, MA) will see significant time at the wing position as a rugged guard that capped off a successful high school career leading his team to the State Championship game his senior year. Keyon Armstrong (Wakefield, MA) is a lockdown defender who has impressive range from beyond the 3 point arc. David Seymour (Amittyville, NY) is another wing player to keep an eye on. Seymour has a complete skill set that will allow him to score in a variety of ways. Freshman recruits Jalon Ray (Hollywood, FL), Chad Graham (Bloomfield, CT) , Jaleel Wilson (Englewood, NJ), and John Woodley (Providence, RI), will all get a chance to prove themselves this year for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs open up their season at home Tuesday November 6th at home vs. Springfield Technical Community College.
