Dean College Academic Catalog 2005-2006

Academic Catalog | Program & Degree Offerings | Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts is a transfer-oriented program designed to fulfill the Liberal Arts core/general education requirements at four-year colleges and universities. Dean College Liberal Arts majors must choose one of five concentrations: Education, English, History, Math/Science, or Psychology. The program provides a broad background within a carefully structured sequence of courses. Most four-year college curricula emphasize specialization within a specific major in the third and fourth years. Like those colleges, Dean’s first two years provide a general background in expository writing, literature, social sciences, history, mathematics, natural sciences, fine arts, and philosophy.

Students interested in a teaching career in elementary or secondary education may begin their coursework in the Liberal-Arts Education concentration. Courses leading to teacher certification will be completed after transferring to a baccalaureate education program with a major in a traditional teaching content area, such as English, history, mathematics, or the natural sciences. To help the student prepare for a successful transfer into an education program, a minimum of nine credits in one of these content areas is required. For those interested in teaching younger children, see the Early Childhood Education major. Those interested in majoring in English should select the Liberal Arts-English concentration. Students who intend to major in history should select the Liberal Arts-History concentration. Those who plan to pursue majors or careers in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, computer science or allied health should select the Liberal Arts-Math/Science concentration. The Liberal Arts-Psychology concentration provides students with a foundation for transfer into a baccalaureate program in psychology, including the SUFFOLK/DEAN Program. It also prepares students for careers in counseling, social work, and human resources.

Transfer from Dean

Students may complete a baccalaureate degree in psychology on the Dean Campus through the SUFFOLK/DEAN Program.

Students who plan to transfer from Dean College to obtain their baccalaureate degree in education should be aware of the high academic standards required by transfer schools. Maintaining at least a 3.0 G.P.A. at Dean is strongly advised in order to transfer directly into four-year education programs. Additionally, a passing score is required on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure for Education majors seeking Department of Education Teacher Certification at four-year institutions in Massachusetts.

In recent years, Liberal Arts majors have transferred to such institutions as American International College, American University, Assumption College, Boston University, Bryant University*, Central Connecticut State University, Curry College*, Emerson College, Emory University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Institute of Technology, Georgia Southern University, Hampshire College, Hawaii Pacific University, Lynn University, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, North Carolina State University, Northeastern University, Marist College, New York University, Providence College, Rutgers University, Suffolk University*, Colleges within the State University of New York system, Suffolk University*, Temple University, University of Connecticut, University of Georgia, University of Massachusetts/Amherst, University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Rhode Island, University of Tampa*, University of Wisconsin, Wheelock College, and Worcester State College*.

*Formal transfer agreements exist with these colleges.
