The Office of Student Development
and Retention coordinates all co-curricular and extracurricular
programs and services as well as providing advocacy through student
outreach activities programming. Together with the Office of Academic
Affairs, the Office of Student Development and Retention works to
help students develop skills that are necessary for success at Dean
College and beyond.
Dean College is committed to providing students with
numerous community service opportunities. Clubs and organizations
as well as residence hall communities are involved in various regional
and national community efforts.
The Dean Commuter Council brings all commuter students
together and involves them in campus life. The club meets regularly
to discuss issues facing commuters and to organize events that bring
commuters and residents together. In addition, there is a newsletter
and special events planned to assist all commuters in their academic
and social pursuits.
The Orientation Camp; First-Year Programs staff provides
programs and services to support new students and their families
with the transition from high school to college. Programs are designed
to assist first-year students in making connections with the Dean
College community, developing new skills and building self-confidence.
Orientation programs include Summer Orientation, Fall Orientation
and January Orientation. These programs are designed to provide
students with information that will help them to have a successful
first year at Dean College. Summer Orientation, a two-day program
offered in June and July, enables new students and their families
to experience life at Dean and to meet members of the faculty, staff
and student body. Resource sessions, panels and receptions provide
information on campus programs, services and resources. Students
take academic assessments prior to arriving at Summer Orientation
to ensure that they are selecting the appropriate level courses
for their first semester. During the program, students have an opportunity
to meet with their advisor and faculty and select classes for the
fall semester.
During the one-day Fall Orientation, students meet
their advisor, prepare for their academic courses, attend programs
on issues of college life, and participate in activities that will
introduce them to other students.
The one-day January Orientation is for students entering
Dean in the spring. It presents information covered in Summer and
Fall Orientation.
The Public Safety Department functions 24-hours-a-day,
7 days a week, providing safety and security on the campus through
proactive crime prevention programs and enforcement of college policies
and local, state and federal laws.
A variety of living arrangements are available to
resident students including traditional residence halls, independent
homes, suite-style living and gender-specific residence areas. New
students are asked to complete a housing questionnaire that identifies
special interests and preferred living arrangements. The questionnaire
is used to match student interests when rooms are assigned and is
available on-line.
Each residence area is managed by experienced Resident
Directors who live in the hall/house year-round. Student Community
Advisors (CAs) also staff the larger residence halls. The Residence
Life staff members help promote and encourage responsible behavior
and build communities that are conducive to academic and personal
development. Each residence area offers programs and activities
throughout the year.
All accepted full-time students are required to reside
on campus. Students are permitted to reside off-campus if they are
living at home with a parent or guardian or can provide proof of
independent status. Third and fourth year students in a bachelors
program may also reside independently off campus. Based on government
regulations, a student must be at least 24 years of age to qualify
for independent status, or be verified as such by the Student Financial
Services Office. Students who pay their enrollment fee deposit by
May 1 will be given preference for housing. Students who pay their
enrollment fee deposit after May 1 will be assigned housing on a
space-available basis.
Dean College Health Services is a satellite facility
of the Tri-County Medical Associates that is part of the Milford-Whitinsville
Regional Hospital, a major affiliate of UMass Memorial Health Care.
The Wellness Center is staffed by a Nurse Practitioner who provides
acute care interventions with the goal of helping students develop
health-enhancing behaviors. Students needing more extensive medical
services will be referred to Franklin Primary Care at the Franklin
Medical Center located just one mile from campus. Students also
have access to the extensive directory of physicians and services
within the Tri-County Medical Associates’ network. This offers
students a wide variety of specialty care and outpatient centers
dedicated to the ongoing health and wellness of individuals. This
partnership gives students quality health care both on and off campus.
Massachusetts State law requires that all students
have health insurance. Students will be automatically enrolled in
and charged for the School Insurance Plan unless proof of other
health insurance coverage is provided. If you have your own health
insurance, you must complete the online Dean College Insurance Waiver
Form, available through a Quicklink on the Dean College website.
After the waiver form has been submitted, the School Insurance Plan
charge will be removed from your account. If the Wellness Center
does not receive confirmation of completion of the online waiver
form, you will be charged for the school insurance.
Dean College, in accordance with the Massachusetts
Department of Health, requires the completion of a mandatory health
and immunization form by all students, both resident and commuter.
Students must complete this mandatory health form in order to attend
classes. Failure to complete the form and submit a certificate of
immunizations may result in registration delays. The form is available
in registration packets and also online through a Quicklink on the
Dean College website.
Dean College is in a partnership with Arbour Counseling
Services of Franklin. The combined resources offer students professional
counselors on the Dean Campus and easy referral to Arbour Counseling
Services for medication assessments, psycho-diagnostic testing and
additional off-campus personal counseling. Arbour Counseling Services
offers a comprehensive range of outpatient mental health services.
The College reserves the right to require the withdrawal
of any student whose physical or psychological condition is determined
to be unsatisfactory or detrimental to the best interest of the
College or student.
Students are encouraged to take an active role in
the College community by participating in one or more of the over
twenty recognized and active clubs and organizations, recreational
programs, performance groups and special committees. Several different
types of programs and events are sponsored by the Student Government
Association (SGA) in conjunction with the Student Activities Committee
(SAC). Along with SGA, other student clubs and organizations offer
activities that cover a broad range of interests. Events are planned
throughout the week and weekend on campus.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is an elected
group of students representing all recognized organizations and
classes. It is viewed by the student body as having the power to
establish student programs and services and as a means of assuring
that the students’ voices are heard in the governance of the
college. SGA meets weekly to discuss matters of student concern
and takes the lead in presenting the student viewpoint to the faculty
and administration.
Dean’s intercollegiate athletic
program encompasses eleven varsity sports for men and women. The
teams compete under the auspices of the National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA) and also in the highly competitive
Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Both associations offer
opportunities for individual and team recognition, as well as possibilities
for post-season play regionally (Region XXI) and nationally.
The athletic program is dedicated to nurturing the
athletic and academic growth of the individual. The academic monitoring
system and close personal attention paid to the student athlete
insure that s/he receives the support necessary to experience positive
results on the playing field and in the classroom.

tennis courts.
Pieri Gymnasium, home of the “Bulldogs’’
basketball and volleyball teams, seats 900 for home activities.
The weight room features state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment
and a full line of Cybex strength training machines. In addition,
a large fully equipped training room is provided for injury prevention
and rehabilitation.
Dean offers performance-based partial scholarships
for athletes who exhibit outstanding athletic ability. Coaches evaluate
potential scholarship recipients through personal visits, actual
game observation, videotapes and high school coach’s recommendations.
In addition to the varsity athletic program, Dean
provides intramural and supervised recreational activities. Intramural
activities change each year based on student interests. Past activities
have included basketball, indoor lacrosse, indoor soccer, volleyball,
softball, and aerobics. Women’s, men’s and co-ed teams
participate in these activities.
Students are also encouraged to pursue physical
activity on a drop-in basis. Weight training and aerobic conditioning,
basketball, swimming, table tennis and volleyball are among the
most popular free-play activities.
