COMMUNICATIONS

The Communications major prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions, leading to exciting and challenging careers in various media fields.

Career areas include radio, television, newspapers, magazines, public relations, or advertising.  This program provides both theory and hands-on experience so students are better equipped to choose their career path.

A variety of communications skills may be obtained by working in college media such as the Dean's 125-watt stereo radio station (WGAO 88.3 FM), or in the College's video studio, which interfaces with the community cable station. These experiences, coupled with classroom studies and field work at area newspapers, television stations and radio stations, provide students with a solid foundation in production, on-air broadcasting, programming, news gathering, taping, layout, and sales.

Through careful selection of electives, students may direct their studies toward a career in station management, public relations, sales, advertising, script and news writing, journalism, radio and television production, announcing, and programming. Because most of these careers require a bachelor's degree for advancement, the Communications major is designed to facilitate transfer to a four-year college. Students who choose to begin a career after graduation from Dean will be prepared for such occupations as disc jockey, apprentice journalist, production assistant and radio/television commercial salesperson.

Students may also complete a baccalaureate degree in communications on the Dean campus through the SUFFOLK/DEAN Partnership.

Telecommunications Center

Dean's Telecommunications Center contains a state-of-the-art video facility that includes a spacious television master control room, a four-camera studio, and two post-production (editing) suites. In addition, the Center houses four high-tech audio studios as well as a classroom.

WGAO: Power 88 FM Radio Station

WGAO is Dean's state-of-the-art radio station. The station is primarily directed and staffed by Dean students. It consists of a well-equipped on-air studio, music library, newsroom and a production studio.
