Sports Fitness

The Sport/Fitness Studies major includes the traditional field of study in physical education, the scientific areas of exercise science and athletic training, as well as the rapidly expanding field of sports management. Students must choose from one of four concentrations within their first semester. However, students have the flexibility and freedom to change to another concentration after the first semester. Because most of these careers require a bachelor's degree, the majors are designed to facilitate transfer to a four-year college or university.

Athletic Training  - Students planning careers in sports medicine should select this concentration. A certified athletic trainer is an allied health care professional who works with athletes to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate sport injuries under a physician's direction in professional team, college, high school, and clinical settings. This track offers courses and practicum experience under the direction of a NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) licensed certified athletic trainer. Certified athletic trainer students must be accepted into a CAAHEP entry-level Athletic training curriculum program and receive a bachelor's degree, and this program provides excellent preparation for students to transfer into these programs. While at Dean, students are expected to accumulate a total of 50 hours of supervised athletic training experience involving at least two different athletic teams. Please note that a strong science background is recommended for a student who chooses this concentration.

The Exercise Science concentration is designed to allow students to continue their academic careers in a variety of majors, such as Exercise Science, Health, Health Fitness, and Physical Education.

Careers as Physical Education teachers, coaches, and health and fitness instructors are some of the many choices open to those who choose the Physical Education concentration.

The Sports Management concentration is designed for students who wish to combine their interests in both business management and athletics. It prepares students for a variety of career areas, including those in professional sports, club or camp management, educational athletics and sports and leisure retailing and manufacturing. Both career and transfer opportunities await students completing this concentration.
