  • Chairman of Pawtucket Red Sox Visits Dean College

    Larry Lucchino 1.9.17

On Monday, January 9, 2017 Dean welcomed Larry Lucchino to speak to students participating in the winter intersession classes.

Lucchino is a former CEO of the Boston Red Sox where he oversaw three World Series titles during his tenure. He is currently Chairman and Co-Owner of the minor league baseball team, the Pawtucket Red Sox.

After graduating from Yale Law School, Lucchino launched his career in Washington D.C. at Williams & Connolly law firm. While working at the firm, Lucchino was offered the opportunity to do business with both the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles. Eventually, he would move on to become a co-owner of the San Diego Padres, followed by his role as CEO of the Boston Red Sox.

However, Lucchino had to work hard to get to where he is today. He advised the students, “if you get asked to do something small, do that small thing...even if it's only a ten minute project." He continued, “I took a small piece of litigation, handled it competently and was then asked to complete larger projects."

Lucchino came bearing gifts for the Q&A portion of his presentation, encouraging students to ask meaningful questions in exchange for autographed baseballs, David Ortiz memorabilia, and other Red Sox gear.

When asked his advice on how to stand out in your career, Lucchino urged students to bring something extra to the table, "I had a law degree and that differentiated me from other candidates."

Lucchino ended the presentation by sharing some insider information about the Red Sox. A little-known fact is that Pedro Martinez was a major influence in the decision to sign David Ortiz after a conversation the two had in a grocery store. Lucchino also shared that his favorite sports championship ring is the 2004 Red Sox World Series ring, even though he expressed, "it's like being asked to pick your favorite child. They are all my favorite."

For students interested in interning with the Boston Red Sox, applications are due January 15th. For students interested in interning with the Pawtucket Red Sox, applications are due February 15th.
