The Dean College women’s basketball team has been selected as the 12th seed in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. They will play the fifth seed, Owens CC (Ohio) on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 2:00pm eastern time.  Owens is currently ranked 5th in the latest NJCAA National Poll and recorded a 26-6 record, winning the District I Tournament, 71-69 over Cincinnati State. Dean, currently ranked 19th in the poll, defeated Union County College of New Jersey in the District N Tournament to qualify for the its first national tournament.

The Dean Women’s basketball program under Head Coach Grahm Smith have won three consecutive Region XXI (New England) titles under his watch.  This year they have set the school record for victories (24) and also a school record for most consecutive Region championships (3).  In his three years at Dean, the women have a 57-17 record.

This year the freshman have carried the load, as Vianah Smith and Denisha Gardener led the team in scoring and rebounding, respectively. Smith averaged 17.1 points per game and 3.5 assists per game, while Gardener averaged 12.3 rebounds per game and was second on the team in scoring.  Freshmen Fataya Larry and Chelsea Johnson round out the newcomers who have been the main cogs for the Bulldogs, with Larry averaging 10.5 rebounds per game and 9.5 points per game, with Johnson being more of an outside threat, averaging 8.8 points.

Sophomore captain Morgan Turner has been playing very well during their post-season run, averaging double digits in scoring the past three games.  Turner has signed a letter of intent to attend DII Lemoyne College next fall.

One of the strengths of this team has been their depth and the freshmen who see significant time off the bench are Kristen and Jordan Gomes, Iindia Pina, Jamaya Cleveland and Farrah Beatty.

The NJCAA National Tournament is being hosted by Johnson County Community College in Overland, Kansas March 15-19, 2016. For more information on the tournament, visit www.jccc.edu/cavs/njcaatournament. All games will be streamed live and can be located at www.njcaatv.com.
