      Dean College Receives NEH Grant to Transform Education in the Humanities

      Dean College is among 245 recipients slated to receive a total of $39.3 million in grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)

      Franklin, MA (August 2, 2017) – Dean College is among 245 recipients slated to receive a total of $39.3 million in grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) aimed at supporting vital research, education, and public programs in the humanities.

      This is Dean College’s first grant application submitted and award received from NEH. The College plans to use the awarded funding to infuse the humanities into Core Distribution offerings by developing and piloting two courses in the history of science that incorporate hands-on labs: “History of Science” and “Henrietta Lacks: Medicine, Race, Class, and Gender in America.”

       “Culture shapes science, and science shapes culture,” says Project Director and Associate Professor of History Dr. David Dennis. “From early ideas about the Earth’s place in the cosmos to popular attitudes toward climate change and cancer treatment, the humanities are essential for how we understand the past and present of modern scientific society. This project furthers the ongoing revitalization of the humanities for the twenty-first century at Dean College and beyond. The opportunity to combine history courses with lab science underscores Dean’s record of educational innovation. I look forward to working with science and humanities faculty, as well as external scholars, to bring this groundbreaking curriculum to our students.”

      Dean Leadership Institute Presents: Michael Spillane, February 15, 2018

      Dean College is honored to host Michael Spillane, President of Categories and Product at NIKE for the Dean College Leadership Institute Executive Lecture Series on Thursday, February 15, 2018. The Executive Series offers a unique and interactive opportunity for students, alumni and the local community to interact with today’s business leaders.

      Spillane is responsible for developing the strategy that drives the creation of all NIKE footwear, apparel and equipment. He also leads the merchandising of all product to the global marketplace. Prior to his current position, he was a GM and VP for NIKE, Greater China. He also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Umbro Ltd. and Chief Executive Officer of CVEO Corporation (formerly, Converse Inc.). 

      With extensive experience in marketing consumer products, Spillane previously held senior management roles at leading apparel and textile companies, including Malden Mills, Tommy Hilfiger USA, Jockey International, and Missbrenner, Inc. Spillane serves on the board of directors at The Boston Beer Co., and Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA).

      Featuring an unprecedented list of national business leaders, including past speakers like Robert K. Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Bert Jacobs, Anne M. Finucane, the Executive Lecture Series is a signature event for the Dean Leadership Institute and an exciting opportunity for our students and the community to gain knowledge from an experienced business executive. 

      The speaking program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Guidrey Center at Dean College, 109 West Central Street, Franklin, MA on February 15, 2018. The program is FREE and open to the public.       Dean College looks forward to the start of our spring semester. Resident students should report to campus on Monday, January 15th between 9am-5pm. And New Student Check-In is from 9am-10am in the Campus Center.  Commuter students who have been financially cleared may go directly to their first registered class on Tuesday, January 16th.

      The School of Continuing Studies at Dean College will offer Winter Intersession courses with one-week courses beginning Monday, January 8, 2018. Accelerate your progress toward a degree or certificate program this winter by enrolling in one of Dean College’s one-week classroom courses. These engaging classes are open to students of all ages and experience levels.
