Library Cards

The Dean College Library is a member of the Minuteman Library Network (MLN) – a network of 6 academic libraries and 35 public libraries. Dean College Minuteman library cards are issued ONLY to current students, faculty and staff but are recognized at all MLN libraries. Anyone not connected to Dean College is sent to the Franklin Public Library, across the street, to apply for a Minuteman library card.

  • Full-time students are required to present their Dean College ID cards when applying for a library card. Library barcodes are attached to the back of the IDs.

  • Part-time students not holding a Dean ID card must present their registration form from the Registrar’s Office containing their name, address, student ID number, and class(es) they are enrolled in when applying for a Dean library card. Those students without IDs will be issued a blue Minuteman library card.

  • Faculty members with Dean IDs will have the barcode placed on the back of their ID card. Those without IDs will be issued blue Minuteman cards.

  • Kaplan ASPECT students must be staying in Massachusetts a minimum of two months in order to apply for a Dean College Minuteman library card.

  • PIN codes are assigned at the time of registration. The last four digits of the Dean Library barcode numbers are entered as the PIN code. The card holders are then encouraged to access their new account and change their PIN to any four numbers of their choice.

Patrons and Dean Alumni are welcome to use their Minuteman library cards to borrow Dean’s circulating materials.

A Dean ID / Library card and the materials checked out on that card are the responsibility of the card owner. Therefore, it is advised that you do not loan your card to others.

  • Late Fees (Fines) and Overdue Materials

Fines are $.05 per day up to a $1.00 maximum per item. However, there is an exception to this rule: Dean students, Dean faculty and Dean staff borrowing materials from the Dean College Library will have late fees waived when the overdue materials are returned to the Dean College Library Circulation Desk. However, any other accrued fees must be lower than $5.00 in order for the student/patron to borrow additional materials.

Overdue notices are printed up every Monday by the Minuteman system at Central Site, in Natick, and sent to the libraries via MetroWest delivery on Tuesdays. Once the notices are received, they are sent out within 24 hours to the students/ staff/ faculty campus mailboxes. Patrons’ notices are mailed out at that time, also, via the campus mailroom.

Overdue materials left on students’ accounts will affect borrowing privileges at all Minuteman libraries and result in college restrictions – such as registering for classes, receiving a diploma, or obtaining transcripts.

    Holds (Requests)

Holds (requests) can be placed by students, faculty and staff on any Minuteman circulating material(s) for delivery to the Dean College Library. In order to do this, you will need a current Dean College ID/ library card with an active PIN code. The Minuteman Library Network is available at the following URL: http://library.minlib.net/search/ . You are able to search all 41 libraries in the network or choose a specific library catalog to search. When you locate what you need, click on the blue “Request” button and enter your 14 digit library card number with no spaces, enter your 4 digit PIN code, chose Dean College as your pick-up location, then click on the “Submit” button.  Once the requested material(s) arrive, you will be notified via phone and / or e-mail. Our pick-up and delivery days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    Interlibrary  Loans (ILLs)

If you are unable to locate the books or articles you need in the Minuteman catalog or databases, present your information at the Circulation Desk and we will do an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for you. ILLs are requests made to libraries that are outside the Minuteman Library Network. Materials have come from all over the United States to fill requests. However, please plan ahead, some ILLs can take 7-14 days to arrive at the college for you.

    Virtual Catalog

The Virtual Catalog allows library users in good standing to simultaneously search several library catalogs and request items that are unavailable at any Minuteman Library. The Virtual Catalog system is supported with state and federal funds and can be accessed via a link on the Minuteman Library Network homepage at the following URL: http://library.minlib.net/search/.  There are no renewals on Virtual Catalog materials.

    Faculty Reserves

Materials placed on reserve by the faculty are available at the Dean College Library’s Circulation Desk. Students will need their Dean ID/ library card to borrow the reserve material from the Circulation Desk. All Faculty Reserve materials must be used in the library within a set two hour time limit. To see if your professor has something on reserve for your class go to this URL: http://www.dean.edu/it/library/reservebookroom.htm.

    Audio/ Video Collections

Since the CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes owned by the Dean College Library support the curriculum, they belong to our Faculty Reserve collection and may ONLY be checked out by Dean College professors. Students who need to watch or listen to these materials may do so in the library. There are two TV/ VHS systems, two TV/ DVD systems, and one boom box available, opposite the Circulation Desk, for student use.

    Periodicals

Magazines, journals, and newspapers do not circulate. However, information from these sources may be photocopied. Plus many full-text articles can be accessed through our electronic databases.

If you are unable to locate a particular article, stop by the Circulation Desk, give us all the information you have – such as the title of article, author of the article, publication it appeared in and the date of the periodical – and we’ll be happy to search for the article or do an interlibrary loan for you.

    Textbooks

The library does not purchase textbooks nor have textbooks available for student use unless the professor has placed it on Faculty Reserve. Reserves are checked out to a student’s library card and may be used for 2 hours within the library. At the end of the two hours the student must return the book to the Circulation Desk. If no one else is waiting for the book, the student may borrow it for another two hours.
