Men's Soccer

  • Going for the Crown

Men SoccerHead Coach Jim Hopkins hopes to re-capture the Region XXI crown this year, after finishing as Region runner-up in 2013. With a veteran group of returning players, he is optimistic as the season approaches.

Dean advanced to the final of the 2014 Bulldog invitational on Saturday, September 13, with a 2-1 win over ASA. Dean jumped on ASA when they were awarded a penalty kick early in the first half and Marcos Tavares scored his seventh goal of the season when he calmly passed the ball past the ASA keeper. Dean scored 10 minutes later when a long throw in by Captain Daniel Saggal was flicked on by Brendan Vasconcelos and fell to Matteo Frazzoni. Matteo calmly knocked the ball in the bottom right corner. ASA got a goal back in the 35th minute when they served a ball from the right flank that found an unmarked player on the back post. Both teams had their chances in the second half but Karim Mokhtar stood his ground for 45 minutes coming up with multiple saves to preserve the win.

On Sunday the men suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Bunker Hill CC in the championship game of the tournament. Bunker Hill got out early on the Bulldogs in the first half and really controlled the game, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes. Dean was out shot 10-1 in the first half and went into halftime down 2-0. The Bulldogs were a different team in the second half, out shooting Bunker Hill 11-4 but could not find the finishing touch to get back into the game. Bunker Hill had a late goal with 15 seconds left to finish the game 3-0.
