Dean College Holds 152nd Commencement, May 5, 2018

      05/05/2018

Dean College held its 152nd Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Close to 350 students received their degrees.

Dean College held its 152nd Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Dean College campus in Franklin, MA. Close to 350 students received their degrees, with many family and friends in attendance. Continuing with tradition, the 2018 Commencement ceremony was held outside along Awpie Way, considered by many as the most beautiful and iconic part of campus.

The keynote address was provided by Dean College President, Dr. Paula M. Rooney, who spoke to students about a large issue today – trust. She urged students to “Trust in your deepest self. Shun the impulse to devalue your own self-faith.” She added, “I urge you to accept the role of change – and chance – in your life ahead, trusting in yourself to embrace them with confidence gained at Dean.”

Dr. Rooney referenced the 50th Society, reminding students to reflect on their alma mater as a place that makes a difference. “I hope that when you gather back here in 2068 and put on your golden cap and gown that you will relate that timeless trust to members of the class of 2068.”

Additional remarks were provided by Mark D. Boyce, Chairman of the Dean College Board of Trustees, along with graduating student, Nabeel Barqawi.

Quoting pop culture, Mr. Boyce, left the graduates with a few thoughts to ponder. “Never give up on your dreams” and like the movie The Greatest Showman, “become the greatest at what you choose.” He urged graduates to give back to the world like Mr. Rogers did. And to “Gather your own facts, make up own mind, and write your own story.” Finally, he advised the graduates not to be afraid to fail.

A Business Management major with a minor in Psychology, student speaker Nabeel Barqawi was born and raised in Kuwait. He began his speech by describing his admiration for his two older brothers, who both earned class rings. To Nabeel, these rings symbolized the hard work and effort that was put into their education. He too had hopes to earn a class ring, but was unsure of his academic future.

“Arriving at Dean was the turning point of my life.” As Nabeel prepared this speech, his ring arrived.

“This ring was once a block of metal that served as the foundation for its creation. Just like Dean served as the foundation from which our paths would be carved.”

Nabeel credited many members of the Dean Community and described his experience with The Dean Difference as “acknowledging our strengths and pushing us out of our comfort zones, enabling us to pursue our dreams and follow our passions.”

Nabeel reminded his classmates to “enjoy the adventures ahead by going on this journey armed with enthusiasm and curiosity. In times of struggle, find something that reminds you of how far you have come. For me, this ring serves as a reminder to never tell myself ‘I can’t’.”
