Your Personal Advisor, Every Step Of The Way

All of us want to function on our own. The College embraces the principle of student responsibility and the expectation that ultimately you are responsible for your own achievement.  After all, making your own decisions is a mark of maturity as well as an essential tool for achieving success after graduating. However, at Dean, we also recognize that another indicator of maturity is knowing how to use the specialized skills of others to accomplish your goals.  You are not alone when it comes time to make decisions affecting your academic experience.  Your advisor will be with you every step of the way assisting you in navigating toward college success and developing realistic goals.

When Would I Meet With My Advisor?

As a first year student you might seek someone with the "big picture" of Dean who will help you take control of the transition to college.  Decisions such as "am I in the correct major", "should I enroll in four or five classes", and "what should I do if I'm struggling in a class" are only a few of the reasons why you would meet with your advisor during your first year.  As a second-year student, you will want to consult with with an objective advisor who's highly knowledgeable about four-year colleges and what admissions officers look for as transfer to a Bachelor's degree program gets closer.  In both cases, that "someone" is your personal advisor.

It's a unique Dean College advantage.  The Advising Center assures you get exactly what you need, when you need it.    And, because you will have the same advisor for the two years you are at Dean, you will always have someone who will believe in your academic potential and who will push you towards turning that potential into achievement.

Your advisor will meet with you one on one to help you:

(a) Select a major
(b) Monitor your academic progress
(c) Map out your schedule
(d) Research transfer opportunities upon graduation
(e) Explore and clarify your career goals
(f)  Handle all international student immigration issues

As a student, you play a key role in your academic experience at Dean College and should:

(a) Know your requirements for your academic program
(b) Seek advising on a regular basis
(c) Monitor your academic progress
(d) Begin career and transfer discussions early with your advisor
