Rules and Regulations [see also Student Technology Use Policy]
1. Before receiving a network password, each student must agree to and sign a copy of the Student Technology Policy.
2. Violations of the Student Technology Policy may result in loss of network privileges, fines, and additional disciplinary action.
3. Have respect for the academic environment.
4. Use of the Academic Computing Center is for Dean College students only.
5. No smoking or chewing tobacco is allowed.
6. No food or drink is to be brought into or consumed in the labs.
7. Do not make copies of software.
8. You must show your valid Dean College ID card to have your password reset by the Information Technology staff.
9. The computers are for academic use, which takes priority over recreational use.
10. When searching the Web and when using other educational tools, please be considerate of others around you. Inappropriate use of educational resources that disrupt or obstruct normal operation of Academic Computing will not be tolerated.
11. Electronic mail gimmicks such as "Love Bugs," "Snowballs," or "Chain Letters" are not permitted. Frivolous network traffic caused by such messages decreases the performance of the system and detracts from the proper intended educational use of electronic tools.
12. Harassment, abuse and/or disrespect of any person via Dean College computer systems is prohibited.
13. All computer users must adhere to the policies posted in the Academic Computer Labs.
Guidelines for the Use of Mobile Devices
The use of electronic organizers, cellular phones, pagers and any other electronic device in a manner that disrupts college activities is not permitted. Use of any kind of device, such as a cellular phone with photographic capability, in a manner which invades another community member's privacy is strictly prohibited.
Administrative Access to Student Files
Student e-mail files and other Internet files and records may be accessed and examined by administrators for educational and administrative purposes, including the need to ensure that the Academic Computing rules and regulations are adhered to. Administrators will also cooperate with appropriate requests by law enforcement authorities for access to student e-mail and Internet files. Students should not assume that e-mail and Internet files are confidential. Communication with students regarding academic and extra-curricular activities may take place through email communiqués. For these reasons, students are expected to provide and ensure that appropriate staff/faculty have accurate address(es).
Disclaimer of Liability
The College does not screen incoming or outgoing e-mail or Internet postings. The College disclaims liability for the content of any material that a student may post or access on the Internet, including liability for copyright infringement, defamation or privacy invasion. Each student must take full responsibility for his or her own on-line conduct.
LIBRARY
E. Ross Anderson Library
The E. Ross Anderson Library, which received a national award for design, is an essential resource center for both students and faculty. The library has a comprehensive collection of over 54,000 books, 300 periodical subscriptions, and audiovisual materials including videos, CDs, and cassettes. The library provides access to a number of research databases, which include both indexes and full-text articles. The databases include InfoTrac, Electric Library, and Gale periodical, reference, and newspaper databases. In addition, the library subscribes to the SIRS and ERIC databases. Computers are available for students to do research on the Internet.
The library is a member of NELINET and the Metrowest Regional Library System.
Students and faculty may borrow materials from other libraries through the Metrowest interlibrary loan system. The library is a new member of the Minuteman Library Network, which is a network of 40 public and academic libraries in eastern Massachusetts. Once patrons are registered at the Dean College library, they will be able to request and borrow materials from any of the other Minuteman libraries. Students and faculty may currently use their Dean ID card to borrow materials from the Franklin Public Library.
TELEPHONES
All student residence rooms are equipped with at least a phone line.
Students should contact roommate(s) before arriving on campus to decide who will be bringing a telephone. Any type of standard telephone should work with the Dean telephone system. Students do not need a telephone with voicemail capabilities.
Each student may request an individual voicemail box for family and friends to leave messages.
Students have unlimited on-campus and local calling. Students have several options for dialing long distance:
1. Bring a personal cell-phone;
2. Bring a telephone calling card from home;
3. Call collect.
Students having problems with harassing telephone calls should immediately notify Public Safety at ext. 1888.
General telephone and voicemail problems should be reported by contacting the IT helpdesk either by telephone at ext.1633, or in person by stopping by the lobby of the Technology and Science Center, or via e-mail at HelpDesk@dean.edu.
