How do I make an appointment?
Just stop by the little red house next to Woodward House or call ext.1600 during office hours and make a confidential appointment for either health or counseling services with Teri. We make every effort to see you in a timely manner.
I am not sure if I need or want counseling. How can I be sure counseling is for me?
Everyone needs support. Individuals often seek help when they are in crisis and are looking for guidance and validation. Some people wish to explore their own behaviors and decide on how to create positive growth and change. Whatever the issue, the counselors on campus are available to listen compassionately and, unlike family or friends, can be objective in a very valuable way.
Will what I say in counseling remain confidential?
Once someone is a client of the Wellness Center all information is confidential. Counselors are bound to confidentiality under legal and ethical guidelines. In order for a counselor to share information about a client, the client must sign a release form indicating what information they would like shared and with whom. A client has the right to revoke this permission to share information at any time.
Under ethical and legal requirements, a counselor would break confidentiality in the event of clear and imminent danger to a client or another person. Counselors are also required by law to disclose information regarding present child abuse or neglect. Information would not be shared without a client’s knowledge. Our counselors may also discuss clients’ cases with other staff members in an effort to develop ways to help clients’ best. All information shared among these professionals is confidential.
Does it mean I am crazy if I go to counseling?
Absolutely not! Everyone needs support, more at some points in life than at others. It is healthy to seek counseling when you feel you need a confidential, safe place to discuss feelings and issues in your life. Counseling actually has the potential to help people feel less “crazy”.
