The Alumni Spotlight features weekly Q&A with past students to give YOU an inside perspective on life after Dean College!

Sammy Laabs graduated in 2013 with a B.A. degree in dance. Read on to learn more about Sammy!

Where are you currently employed? What industry is it in?

I currently work in the entertainment department for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in Tampa, Florida.

    What is your job title?

    I am a Dancer/ Aerialist.

Tell us about your job. What are some of the duties and activities you are responsible for?

For the past two months, I have been working as a rehearsal swing which means I rehearse with the cast and learn everyone's tracks, preparing myself to step-in whenever necessary. Often times the swings can be sent to a ship as a replacement or they can be given a full ship contract. It's a great way to learn new shows, meet directors in the company as well as furthering skills necessary for ships such as partnering, aerial and different styles of dance.

This past August, I started rehearsal for the Norwegian Pearl and will be performing aboard that vessel from September until March. My duties on the ship include performing 2-3 production shows per cruise as well as small performances around the ship for welcome aboard parties and farewell shows.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The worst part of the job is being away from home and loved ones. The best is being paid to perform multiple times a week while traveling the world. In my opinion, it's one of the most rewarding jobs a dancer could get. The good of this job absolutely outweighs the bad.

How did Dean College prepare you for your career?

The dance program at Dean College gave me the technique and performance training I needed to land this job. Because of my degree in dance I feel confident as a performer whether it's at an audition, rehearsals or performing at sea.
