  • Dean College Celebrates Men's and Women's Basketball Team Send-Off to USCAA National Tournament

    The Dean College Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams celebrated “bulldog nation” style on Monday night with a send-off party for the USCAA National Tournament. Both teams were selected to compete in the National Tournament held Tuesday, February 28th through Saturday, March 4th in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

    The send-off celebration began with opening words from both team coaches. Women’s Head Coach Graham Smith thanked the crowd for their support. Men’s Head Coach Rico Cabral echoed Smith’s sentiments. “We have tremendous support here at Dean, especially from the dog pound,” said Cabral. “I think they (the fans) even got us a few wins this year.”

    After presenting each individual member of both teams with a gift, Dr. Rooney addressed the teams. “This is an experience of a lifetime that you will remember forever,” said Dr. Rooney. “We are proud of you no matter what the outcome.”

    The lady bulldogs finished a stellar season (21-7) with a blowout victory at Southern Vermont. The ladies are being led by Chelsea Johnson (17.1ppg), Fataya Larry (14.4ppg), Denisha Gardener (10ppg), India Pina (11.5ppg) and Vianah Smith (14.4ppg).

    The women garnered a 7th seed at the tournament and will play #2 Berea College on Wednesday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m.

    The men’s team finished the season at (16-10) led by Naquawan Solomon, who averaged a double-double (19.3ppg and 10.5 rebounds) while starting every game for Dean. Other team standouts include Dayvon Russell (14.8ppg) and Aziz Gilliam (11.3ppg).

    The men earned an 8th seed at the tournament and will play #1 ranked Maine Fort Kent at 1:00 on Wednesday, March 1st.
