On Wednesday, October 25, 2017 Dean College welcomed alumnus Joe Cortese ‘81 as the third speaker of the semester in the Leadership In Action series.

Cortese has spent the last three decades making a name for himself in the radio industry. He is currently the Production Director at CBS Radio Boston, the company which runs stations such as AMP 103.3, MIX 104.1 and 98.5 The Sports Hub, among others. Cortese is also the host of a worldwide syndicated “Retro Pop Reunion on CBS Radio.”

Cortese graduated from Dean College in 1981 where he not only earned his associate’s degree in communication but is also a member of the WGAO Hall of Fame. He continued his education at Temple University in Philadelphia where he worked at WIQQ Philadelphia. Cortese then moved on to his first professional radio job at WPRO-FM in Providence Rhode Island.

“I had the chance to work in NYC but the quality of life for my family was not as good. I gave that up but never regretted it.” Cortese explained, “You'll have bumps in the road, but always consider the quality of life. Make sure you have balance. Try hard, but have time for family."

In his current role as a Production Director, Cortese conceptualizes, writes and produces cutting edge content for multiple radio shows.

After the presentation, students were able to ask Mr. Cortese questions. When asked about how radio is evolving, Cortese explained “What you put in between songs will dictate how the industry changes, along with millennial habits.”

Mr. Cortese left the students with one final thought on how to make it in business.

“I learned in the business to be bulletproof, resilient and how to stay relevant today. You have to change with the times.”

A special thank you to Joe Cortese for joining us.
