Did you know that 100% of our bachelor’s degree students participate in an internship before graduation? This summer many of our students received real-world working experience through internships, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. They worked at companies like Asphalt Engineering, Voya Financial, Mass Mutual and the Newport Gulls to name a few. They were hard at work earning credit while taking steps toward their bright future careers.

We asked Ciara Boyd ’22, who interned at the Milford Arts Council, to tell us more about her experience this summer.

Q. Tell us about your internship experience. How does it relate to your studies at Dean?

Ciara: I’m a Dance major and I also minor in Arts & Entertainment Management. Through my internship with the Milford Arts Council I was able to combine my love for dancing and other forms of art with the business side of the arts.

Q. Describe a few tasks that you completed at your internship.

Ciara: A few tasks I have completed include writing a press release for the Milford Arts Council’s new membership opportunity, writing my own blog post about the arts, creating a promotional video for the Sand Building event and developing daily social media posts to bring awareness to the Council’s Summer Pop Up events.

Q. What have you learned while interning in the middle of a global pandemic?

Ciara: Having to work remotely for a majority of my internship, I was in constant connection with the Milford Arts Council’s employees through zoom conversations, phone calls and text messages. There were a lot of technology and internet issues along the way that made completing my assignments challenging at times. I learned the importance of patience and constant communication with the people you are working with when you are all are not in the same workspace.

Q. How did this internship help you with your future career?

Ciara: In the future I hope to work for a dance company or arts organization. Through my internship, I was able to get first-hand experience of what it’s like to be on the business side of the dance world and what it is like to run an arts company.
