  • Palladino School of Dance Hosts Guest Artist Steve Rooks

    Steve Rooks

This week, the Palladino School of Dance welcomed guest artist Steve Rooks to campus. Mr. Rooks instructed five modern technique classes for a large number of dance majors and also worked with students on choreography for the upcoming Dance Company performance.

Steve Rooks has danced and toured with the Greg Reynolds Dance Quintet, the Mary Anthony Dance Theater, Peter Sparling, Dancer’s Eye, the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble and many more. Mr. Rooks currently works as the Resident Choreographer and Chair of Dance at Vassar College and was a founding faculty member of the Dance Degree Program at Howard University.

We sat down with Mr. Rooks to talk about his week at Dean College.

Q: How did the opportunity arise for you to come to Dean this week?

I was invited by the dean of the School of the Arts, Marc Arentsen.

Q: What is the most important thing that you hope our students learn from you?

I am passionate about dancing and the beauty of honing that craft. My hope is that I can impart some of my experiences as a dancer and instructor, and offer the students some ideas that might help them on their artistic journey.

Q: Do you have any advice for our dance students?

My only advice would be for them to keep loving their work and to get as much as they can out of their experience at Dean College. They have an incredible faculty and top-notch facilities. The students at Dean are very fortunate!

Q: What is your favorite style of dance?

My favorite style of dance is probably contemporary or modern, but I really love all kinds of dance. I find great dancing in any style is extremely satisfying to watch.

Q: Any additional comments or thoughts:

It has been an incredible week at Dean! The students have been tenacious and the faculty and staff most gracious and accommodating. Thank you so much for everything!

A special thank you to Steve Rooks for joining us this week!
