students talking coming out of Paula Rooney Student Center at Dean College discussing the reasons that they considered staying in Massachusetts for college

Many high schoolers think that traveling out of state for school is the best option. They see it as expanding their horizons and getting to be an adult on their own terms. While both of those things are true, there are many reasons for staying in the great state of Massachusetts as well. What are they? Here are six of the most important ones!

1) There’s Nothing Wrong with Being Close to Home

Growth can happen anywhere, even close to home. There’s no need to leave the state for college in order to feel like an adult and expand your horizons. You can do all of that in the same state that you currently live in. Plus, it will be handy to be near your friends and loved ones in case of an emergency. Remember that attending school out of state can result in some expensive travel costs, should you need to book a flight home at a moment’s notice.

2) Love Sports? Massachusetts Has It All

If you love sports of all kinds, then you probably already know that Massachusetts (Boston, to be exact), is the home of everything from pro football to pro hockey teams. Basketball, baseball, and more round out your options. For high schoolers who want to go on to become sports broadcasters or work in sports marketing, there’s no need to leave the state.

3) The Fall Leaves Can’t Be Beat

Who doesn’t love fall leaves? If you enjoy nature, then why leave Massachusetts? The state is filled with parks, hiking trails, and more. There’s nothing quite like attending college near Boston and taking advantage of everything that the city has to offer, and then you can spend a bit of time admiring the fall leaves in a park that’s a short drive away.

4) There’s a Ton of History Nearby

From the history of the city of Boston itself to that of nearby areas, like Salem and Plymouth, where the pilgrims landed, historical sites are everywhere. Looking for street art, museums, and more? You’ll find it all here. Let’s be honest - why go to school out of state for things that you can find right in the state that you’re currently living in?

5) Massachusetts Has Something for Everyone

There’s nothing quite like Massachusetts. Why leave the state when it has so much to offer? The coast is beautiful and filled with opportunities for fishing and other outdoor recreation. The city of Boston has numerous museums, shops, and more, guaranteeing that you’ll find plenty to do. It’s hard to get bored in a state this packed with entertainment.
