Choosing to become an Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, is just the first step toward a long, rewarding career in the medical field. Next, you need to find the best possible EMT training program to fit your needs. There are many different programs out there, and no two are completely alike.

Here are some key aspects that you’ll need to consider when making this important decision.

Do Plenty of Research

The first step in choosing an EMT training program is to do a lot of research. You need to find schools near you, particularly those that have affordable programs, or at the very least, payment plans and student loan availability. After making a list of the four or five programs that seem the most enticing, it's time to move on to the next step, which involves looking at them in depth and comparing their offerings.

Check the School's Reputation

There are a number of different schools out there that offer EMT training. Some of these schools are fly-by-night, which means that they'll give you some training and then disappear, leaving you needing more information to pass the test and become a certified EMT. Other schools have a stellar reputation and a proven track record of successful EMTs. Obviously, you want a school that fits into the latter category.

Make Sure Their Schedule Fits Yours

When are the EMT training courses offered? If you need to work while attending the training sessions, then you'll have to find a program that has evening and weekend courses. However, if you’re able to just focus on your training, then you have a lot more flexibility. It's important to choose a school that has a program that fits your schedule, since you'll need to attend classes and labs, and won't be able to miss them, lest you end up not graduating.

Look at the Training Materials and Plans

Next, check out the training materials. See if the curriculum, including the textbooks and lecture and lab topics are available online, or ask the school for more information. You want to make sure that everything required for EMT certification is included in the program and that nothing crucial is skipped over. After all, you need to be able to pass the tests to work as an EMT.

Ask About Job Placement Services

Going through and completing a training program to become an EMT is just one part of the equation. You’ll also need to find a job afterwards. Ask the schools that you're considering about their job placement services, as well as their job placement percentages. If the school has a solid track record of helping their graduates find jobs, as well as plenty of trainees who have found a job in the field, then you know it's most likely a good choice.
