Want to spend a week of your summer honing your skills? If you’re an aspiring professional dancer or feel as though musical theatre is in your blood, then make sure to check out Dean College’s Summer Arts Institute. Both the dance intensive workshop and the musical theatre intensive workshop take place over the same week, from July 30 to August 6, and are designed for high schoolers who want to dedicate some time to their respective crafts.

Dance Intensive

Open to high schoolers between the ages of 14 and 18, although recent graduates heading into college who are still 18 are eligible, this program is taught by the experts who comprise Dean College’s esteemed dance program.

Students will spend time enhancing their jazz, ballet, tap and modern dance skills, among others, over the course of the week-long workshop. On top of spending time on the dance floor, students will also learn about the ins and outs of being a professional dancer, gaining insight about resumes, physical conditioning and even headshots. Guest artists are also set to appear and will teach students original choreography that they’ve put together themselves.

Of course, a professional athletic trainer will be on hand, just in case of an injury, and the program also overseen 24/7 by Dean College staff, ensuring that the students are safe at all times.

Who Is the Dance Intensive For?

This program is designed for students who want to learn more about the professional dance world, as well as spend some time gaining new skills in their preferred forms of dance. Student who are considering majoring in dance in college will find it very useful.

Musical Theatre Intensive

Like the dance intensive, the musical theatre intensive workshop offered by Dean College is for high school students who are between the ages of 14 and 18. No auditions are necessary for enrolling in the program, and students have a choice of either staying on campus and getting a taste of college life, or commuting from nearby.

Staffed by members of the Dean College faculty, as well as guest artists, attendees will have a chance to learn about auditioning both in person, on-camera and pre-recorded, as well as putting together resumes and headshots. In addition, there will be individual workshops on fun topics like stage combat and choosing a repertoire. Students will also get to hone their dancing, singing and acting skills throughout this week-long intensive.

Students attending the musical theatre intensive will be supervised by trained staff 24/7. There will also be an athletic trainer on hand, just in case of injury during the dance or stage combat portions of the program. 

Who Is the Musical Theatre Intensive For?

This intensive workshop is designed for high school students who want to further enhance their musical theatre skills. For those who are considering majoring in theatre in college, the program will provide a good taste of college life, both on and off stage.
