  • Dean College Men’s & Women’s Basketball Teams Head to Playoffs This Weekend

Men's BasketballThe Dean College men's basketball team will be hosting the New England Regional (Region XXI) Championship Game this Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the college's Pieri Gymnasium.  Dean, with a record of 17-3 and currently ranked 12th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association national poll, will play the Community College of Rhode Island with a game time set at 1:00 p.m.  The two teams have met twice this season, with the Dean Bulldogs coming out on top in both contests, with a 94-81 victory, and just last week, a 108-69 victory.  The winner this weekend will advance to the district championship game on March 8, 2014 at the site of the upstate New York region champion.

Dean's success has come with a fast-paced running and pressing game, as they lead the nation in steals at the Division II level with fifteen a game.  Offensively, they have a balanced attack led by Joe Clarke (13.8 ppg), Charles Correa (13.7) and Jamal Reuben (13.6).  They are currently riding a three-game winning streak with two regular season games remaining, Monday at UConn-Avery point and at home on Wednesday versus Bunker Hill Community College.

Women's BasketballDean's women's basketball team has mirrored the men's team this year, as they enter their own playoffs this weekend, held at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York.  They enter the regional tournament as the top-seeded team with a 15-4 record, and will face the fourth-seeded Orange County Community College squad on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The two teams have split their regular season games, with Dean taking their home game, 76-57, with Orange returning the favor in Middletown, 83-59.  The host Monroe College squad will face the Community College of Rhode Island at 2:00 p.m., with the winners of both games to face off on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  The top two teams in the regional tournament will advance to the four-team district tournament on March 8-9, 2014.

The Dean women lead the nation at the Division II level in steals with just over 18 steals per game and have scored over ninety points seven times this season.  As with the men, they too have a balanced attack with four players in double figures.  Sophomore Shaina Rowley leads the team with 16.9 points per game, followed by Janaysia James at 14.1, Victoria Nguyen at 13.7 and Vanessa Sylvain at 13.6.  James also leads the team in rebounding with 10.5 boards per game.
