    Freshman Preview How To Budget

The Intern Corner features blog posts with helpful advice from our current marketing intern on campus!

They call it the broke college years for a reason. College is expensive, there is no questioning that. Throughout your years as an undergraduate it is a good idea so save money where you can. The following are a few ideas of how to budget.

Apply for scholarships! There are so many scholarships out there. Every scholarship is unique. There are different qualifications and/or different ways to get one. Make sure you explore all scholarship opportunities because you don’t want to miss out on getting money. Start your search at the Dean College Financial Aid Page.

It is important to set aside a certain amount of spending money each semester for anything you may need. In this case, a little really means a little. You do not want to be spending money frivolously. For example, you do not need to order take-out every night. Eat at the dining hall as much as you can and only go out to eat on special occasions.

Plan a trip to Costco or BJ’s to stock up on essentials at the beginning of the semester. Buying in bulk saves you money and time when you are here on campus. You will find places in your room to store these items.

Get a work-study job on campus. Federal Work-Study is a program that provides on-campus job opportunities for students. Eligibility for Work-Study is determined after students complete the FAFSA. Current students can visit the DEAN Careerlink page to see available positions for this year.

If you don’t qualify for the Work-Study program, there are other options for employment. Some campus offices will employ non-Work-Study students in a variety of rolls. In addition, there are many local businesses who employ Dean College students. You can even look online for babysitting or dog walking jobs. There a lot of ways to make some money while on campus. A lot of employers are willing to work around your school schedule.
